Birthday Surprise.
Last Saturday was the 42iitl anniversary of the birth of .f. W. Calkins. His
wifo and friends desired to remind him
of the prent and so arranged for a little
surprise. A party of their most intimate
acquaintances assembled at their home
during the evening and had just seated
themselves, when from on the lawn without there, floated strains of sweet music,
which were furnished by tho lv, of P,
band. The boys were invited in, treated
to ico cream, nfter which they played
several more fine pieces and adjourned,
The party enjoyed themselves with pe-
dro, other sports, ete, for soma time,
when thoy were invited iuto the dining
room and seated around tbe tables thafc
were Joadcd down with all the good
things imaginable. After doing ample
justice to tbe rich viands, the company
again repaired to the parlor and visited
for a time, when the party dispersed for
their several homes. All who had the
pleasure of being present are grateful to
the genial host'and hostess for' the enjoyable entertainment of the evening,
and hope that Mr. Calkins may have
many more as pleasant birthdays.

After a housekeeper fully realizes the
worth of turpentine in the household,
she is neyer willing to bo without a sttp-
pjy of it. It gives quick relief f o burns;
it is an excellent application for corns;
it is good for rheumatism and sore
throats. Then it is a sure preventative
against moths; by just dropping a triile
in the drawers, chests and cupboards it
will render the garments secure from injury during the summer. Jt will keep
ants and bugs from thc closets and
storerooms by putting n few drops in
the corners and upon the shelves; it is
sure destruction to bedbugs, and will effectually drive them away from their
haunts if thoroughly applied to all the
joints of the bedstead.and injures neither
furniture nor clothing. A spoonful of it
added to a pail of warm water is excellent for cleaning paint.
