MILL IS A MASS OF SMOKING EMBERS. -
First Discovered a Little After n o'clock Last
Night, |bnt Too Late to Save Anything—A
Loss of Over $15,000.
One of the "lioaviest losses Glare has
sustained by fire in a long time wns the
one last night that destroyed tho grist
mill of Geo, H. Waldo, which ia located
just outside o£ tlio city limits on tlie
Tobacco rivor. Tho first discovery ol
the fire'was mado a little affcor 11 o'clock;
and before anyone reached there it was
completely enveloped in a sheet of flame.
Thoro are a good many "theories as to tho
cause of tho fire, but it is probable that
the trno version will noyer bo known.
Sorao scorn to think that it is tho work
of an incendiary, as the mill was carefully
looked over previous to tho departure of
tho men from their wcrk, and there was
uot-iin-; 1:: t..e niill that wunld causa u
spontaneous combustion,
Tho loss of the mill -will be i'olt by our
farmers and business mon as Mr. Waldo
Lad been buying wheat, oats and corn
and paying in cash tho highest markot
price, and at tho time of tho firo had
quite a iargo amount of wheat in tho
mill that ho had bought lately.
-Tho loss will aggregate about §15,000,
and the insuray.ee was very light.

WEEKLY CROP REPORT.
The General Outlook in the State Shows improvement.
Following is the summary of the crop
bulletin issued Tuesday by the state
weather bureau: *
A small amount of rainfall, a largo
amount of sunshine and the tempeaature
generally above tho normal, characterize
the weather conditions during the past
week. " Oyer the u^per peninsula and the
northern counties of the lower peninsula
the rainfall, although below the normal,
has been more plentiful than in other sections of tho state and the crops over that
part of the state are repotted as being in
generally good condition. Over the remainder of the state the rainfall has beon" j
much lighter and also very much more |
unevenly distributed. Tho reports from
correspondents from tho central and
southern sections very greatly on account
of this unevoi* distribution of rainfall.
The general condition of corn aQd it& progress during the past week indioaiei.vth_.fc
it will give a yield nearly up to the aver-
ago; by far tho'greatest number of correspondents reports that if the frosts holds
off corn will be up to the average; a
small percentage report the com ssmuoli
beiow tho average and in some cases almost a failare. Late potatoes havo been
doing fairly well, and for the state as a
whole, indicates a. crop nearly up to the
average.. Pastures in tho northern part
of the stato havo greened up and aro affording some fodder. In tho central and
southern portions of tho state they are
still in very poor condition, although
some improvement was reported during
the past week. On account of the very
light hay wop and the poor condition of
tbo pastures, a great many correspondents roport that sowing rye for fodder
has been quite general. Threshing has
advanced steadily during the week and
this work is very near completion in all
parts of tho state. The yield of both oats
and wheat has been light, but in. very
many cases has been better than was expected. Wheat has been yielding a fine,
largo berry, but quite light in weight,
plowing for fall seeding has been general
during the week, but in most parts of the

dition for such work. Fall seeding has
also commenced and considerable rye has
been sown. Fruit of all lands,, etfeepfc
apples, is reported as plentiful in nearly
all parts of the state; apples, however,
bloomed lightly and have been dropping
badly, and altogether indicates aliglit
crop. ._.-•■ -.,.-■.■■...•.-■-.- -:-..-.-.■..
Persons who are subject to diarrhoea
will find a speedy cure in DeWitt's colic
and cholera cure. "Use no other. It is
the best 'that can be made or that money
can procure. It leaves the system in
natural condition after its use.' We sell
it.—Withfrspoon.
Teachers' Institute.
Twenty-five teachers have been in attendance at tho teaoher's institute this
week, whieh is under the management of
Professors Orr Shurtz, of Grand Eapids
and Miller of Big Eapids. The institute
is a success and the ground covered has
b<j.en of a practical nature, and of great
benefit to the teachers. Great stress has-
been brought to bear on the methods of
education of a child, theory and art of
teaching, development of moral, mental
and physical powers of the pupil, and
other matters in accordance with " thl
modem Views of instruction. Oommmis-
sioner Partner has been in attendance
and. has contributed largoly to the instruction of the teachers. Hia views on
the laboratory methods pf instruction are
especially worthy of notice and nre up to
the times.
